Online hatred is more likely to target adults who identify as sexually varied, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, disabled, and/or linguistically different. Adults who belong to these targeted groups are more likely to encounter hate speech online because of bias or discrimination against at least one facet of their identities. The majority of targeted individuals encounter hatred on social media, and it is often committed by an unknown individual. The wellness of adults who belong to the targeted groups is negatively impacted by online hatred. A small percentage of targeted individuals take action after coming across hate speech online, but many choose not to take action because they don’t believe anything will change.
