X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Zoom, Facebook, Twitch, Discord, and Tinder. Real life is digital life. Furthermore, not everyone feels comfortable in digital environments. You are more likely to experience hate, harassment, and violence if you are a woman, girl, Two Spirit, trans, or non-binary person on social media, streaming platforms, dating, messaging, and meeting applications, or gaming websites. In Canada, 1 in 5 women are harassed online. Those at greater risk include young women, racialized women, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. Increased hate in online forums against women, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and specific ethnic and religious groups is a major contributing factor to Canada’s growing hate crime rate. Cyberbullying, harassment, and hate crimes against women occur on a daily basis. It is widespread, pressing, and expanding.
