Media and information literacy (MIL) is a crucial instrument for avoiding and combating hate speech while defending freedom of expression, according to UNESCO’s issue brief. According to the document, MIL gives people the digital, critical thinking, and communication skills they need to identify, evaluate, and confront harmful online content, fend off manipulation and misinformation, and foster civil, inclusive discourse. In order to create resilient, knowledgeable, and democratic digital societies, it promotes the integration of MIL into education, public policy, and digital governance while fostering cooperation between governments, educators, civil society, technology platforms, and media organizations. https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/unesco-launches-issue-brief-media-and-information-literacy-counter-hate-speech-digital-age Share this: Print (Opens in new window) Print Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email Like this:Like Loading… Post navigation Five lessons from the No Hate Speech Week: what we heard, what we learned, what comes next (Council of Europe) New on preventhate.org, 12 July 2026 (Policyinstitute.net)
